Weird mail problem !

Post by beardfreak »

Hi guys - any ideas to an annoying problem I have?

I keep getting a stack of mails bounced back at me, as if I am sending out SPAM using my own Email box?

This has been happening for a while now, but of late seems to be getting a lot worse.

I had about 50 sent back overnight :x

I have run a thorough virus scan btw.

Hiya beardy

you ran spybot? or ad aware? recently, maybe also try http://housecall.antivirus.com (although you did say you've already virus checked)

I have been getting some return mails from an email address that comes to me, but itsn't actually in use for sending emails (so don't see how I could have sent it), so leads me to believe there is a new spaming technique that is havesting/hijacking domains names and then sending out spam from them, using common names like webmaster@.

Do you use zonealarm? its useful since you can see and allow/disallow various programs access to the internet. Possibly disallow open access for your mail program to access the internet until this is solved, and only grant it access when you know what its doing (when you purposely want to collect and send email).

Either way I hope a remedy to spam mail comes about sooners rather than later. Hopefully something useful in this post.

Tisk sounds like someone who knows you or knows someone else that has forwarded you email to someone else has.. (complex huh?) .. a Virus

You see the new bread of Virus programs spoof email ID's from users contacts.. here's how it works..

You send your mate, call him jim ;), an email.. (no Virus On your machine)

You mate finds it funny so sends it to another mate, call him plonker ;).. (no Virus on your mates machine)..

Plonker opens up the email from jim and laughs, sadly he has a virus that then grabs the email address's within reach and spoof's the Address.. So technically although you don't even know Plonker he can send mail for you..

And this is the bastard part.. If you don't know Plonker and he doesn't know he has a Virus, and lets face it he's not going to get returned emails that are using the Spoof technique, then your stuffed...

Right I need a lay down in a dark room now..

..I've lost count of the amount of times I've tried to explain to my users that they DO NOT have a virus.. I make damn sure of it ;)

Still needs must..

*sigh*
