Got a job?

Post by Chain »

Well it has finally happened.

I've been told I'm going to be made redundant within the next couple of months. :(

So now I'm stuck with the thorny issue of what to do next... ..

Many thoughts running through my mind at the moment, not many good either I have to admit.

So whatv to do?

Thoughts of selling Retro Stuff are top of the agenda at the moment... Either a shop, unlikely due to costs.. Or more likely a website offering people the chance to Auction Retro Computer and Console stuff, Strangely I have been working towards this goal for a good couple of months now (hence the retro-computers.com domain) so it all seems to be pointing towards branching out for myself and taking a massive risk, got a house riding on this.. Oerr..

Anyway the incomplete version of the website is currently available to view at www.retro-computers.com/indexc.shtml check it out and let me have your thoughts.

Is this a good idea?

Or should I go the evil route of selling Retro Stuff on eBay, which sadly now has VAT too :(

Toying around with other little bits and bobs like going for an IT Managers role, but sadly as nothing is really out there at the moment looks unlikely to happen.

So anyone got any suggestions? Jumping off a high building has already been considered.. But the pavement hurts hehe..

Sad news mate, and my sympathies.

One other suggestion; have you thought about selling DVD's, either on eBay or on your own site? Now that more and more machines are appearing in Joe Bloggs' home you might want to get into the 'boom' early? I know someone who makes a very good living selling DVDs on eBay, and has just branched out into selling from a website as well. Checkout www.rowdysdvds.com and also the username fehan on eBay. They specialise in R1 stuff.

The retro stuff would be great, but is there a big enough market to make a living out of. I've seen a few (poor) online attempts, and it doesn't look like they are doing too much trade.

I thought about it myself a year or so ago to try to make myself a bit of spare cash. Never got around it it. Which reminds me, if you want a free Domain Name, you are welcome to mine www.retrovault.co.uk :)

Like you, I also toyed with the idea of setting up a LAN gaming centre, with weekly competitions, and big plasma screens for visitors to watch tournaments on etc. Also incorporating a cafe. After adding up the possible cost, I decided to wait until I'd won the lottery! I'd love to run something like that though.

On another note does anyone know how the hell I would go about finding out who owns retro-computers.co.uk I knwo the name, its available on the WHOIS thingybob.. But sadly no contact information.. Would love to grab the domain too.. Hmm

Had a look around myself mate, but can't seem to find any details about the owners contact details other than the owners name (sarah marion cunliffe) which I'm sure you already know. I see that the DN has been detagged, but there's no way of knowing when it's due for renewal, unless Nominet will tell you.

Are you a member of 123reg.co.uk Chain? If so, let me know your username and I'll transfer the retrovault.co.uk name over to you immediately.

Also, I can let you have www.retromasters.co.uk for bugger all as well if you want it :)

bad news Chain.....

i think a few of us have been in that boat once or twice now... :(

not the best situation

but the question i want to know is are you getting a fat payoff??

if so then put your feet up and take it easy for a while...

i personally can't see much money being made out of auctioning retro computer stuff online... whilst it sounds like a nice idea i can see much $ coming from it....

but i don't know what to suggest..... job hunting is something i really hate....

Hi Shane

Again - just to echo the sentiment. Really sorry to hear about the job. If it's any consolation, I've been out for over a year now and to be honest, love the freedom and extra cash here and there

A man of your talent (IT skills & otherwise) will always find work on the side to keep you afloat. I'm pretty sure of that.

If all your ventures go tits up, move to Brum and you can hang out with me, I'll look after you and do your head in !

Had a look at your site, it looks ok, bit basic I thought personally and needs some spit and polish. But I am no big web designer. I am going to change the format of my own site soon, as I am fed up with the old look now and want something that is easier to update and less fussy (not so many subsections).

Take care
